Ceylon Electricity Board Unions yesterday threatened to stage an indefinite strike if the Board of Directors refuses to approve their bonuses.

The CEB employees are seeking a one and a half month bonus.

"This is a serious issue and we will stage an indefinite strike if the bonuses are not approved at today's meeting between the Board of Directors and Unions", Convener of the CEB Trade Union Collective, Ranjan Jayalal told Ceylon Today yesterday.

Jayalal said that the decision on a strike will be taken today and some 23,000 employees are ready to join in the trade union action and this number could swell if the 24,000 members of the CEB Engineers Union also decide to join in the fray.

Responding to a question as to whether the entire country would be facing darkness he said he was not empowered to say that.

Meanwhile, Minister of Power and Renewable Energy Ranjith Siyambalapitiya told Ceylon Today that a series of proposals and written instructions had been handed over to the CEB General Manager Sam Samarasinghe in a bid to diffuse the tension and were confident that the negotiations would end amicably on both sides.

"I am very confident that the dispute would be settled tomorrow", the Minister said.
