If any politician attempts to influence Government officials who are committed to hold the upcoming Local Government election in a free and fair manner, the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) will step in to protect such officials, JVP Leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake said yesterday.

He was addressing a gathering of JVP candidates, who will contest the forthcoming elections, at the Sugathadasa Stadium, Colombo yesterday.

Dissanayake requested all State officials to do the needful to ensure a free and fair election. He added that in each election, politicians attempt to influence State officials and misuse State property. Government officials who got involved in such activities have been punished and had to leave the country in disgrace.

There is no guarantee that Government politicians will not attempt to influence the State officials during the Local Government election period. Thus, the JVP will ensure that State officials will not be intimidated and influenced by the politicians with power, the JVP leader said.

The JVP Summit was attended by a large number of party members, including the candidates, district leaders and the national leaders of the party. The JVP also unveiled a 12-point code of conduct of its candidates. Among the JVP candidates are professionals, and former United National Party (UNP) and Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) members, he added.
