Garbage, including hospital waste, is mounting at the Gampaha District General Hospital after the staff was told to refrain from using the incinerator since the smoke was hazardous to both, the patients and employees.

Hospital employees told Ceylon Today that the smoke fills the wards including the children's sector since the incinerator is situated in close proximity to the wards.

The hospital waste includes huge loads of blood soaked cotton and other fabrics such as gauze, plasters and bandages and therefore the smoke could be toxic, they added.

The hospital's Director Dr. Mudith Karunatileke said about 300 kilograms of garbage is burned daily inside the premises.

Repeated requests to the maintenance companies to raise the chimney of the incinerator have fallen on deaf ears, Dr. Karunatileke said.
