The Tamil Progressive Alliance (TPA) has requested the Ministry of Provincial Councils and Local Government to put on hold the gazetting of the 20th Amendment in order to include their proposal to increase the number of Pradeshiya Sabhas in the Nuwara-Eliya District from the present five to twelve, thus increasing the probability of a postponement of the Provincial Councils and Local Government Elections.

TPA Leader Minister Mano Ganesan said, it is necessary to increase the number of Pradeshiya Sabhas in the Nuwara-Eliya District and this requires amendments to the Provincial Councils and Local Council laws, which may......delay elections from between two to three days from the scheduled date.

"There are 250,000 people in the Nuwara-Eliya Division and 225,000 people in the Ambegamuva Division but there are only five Pradeshiya Sabhas which is an injustice to them. When people need to sort out issues they are forced to travel long distances to the relevant Pradeshiya Sabha. Thus we decided to call for an increase in the number of Pradeshiya Sabhas," he said.

Minister Ganesan added that following approval given by President Maithripala Sirisena, Minister Faizer Musthapaha had agreed to discuss the issue with the relevant officials.

"We will hold discussions starting from today (17) with Ministry officials" he added.

He further said since there will be a small delay in the gazetting process of the 20th Amendment, the elections may be held between
20 -27 January 2018.
