The Ministry of Megapolis and Western Development (MMWD) will introduce bus priority lanes to reduce traffic congestion in Colombo beginning 15 August.

According to MMWD, bus priority lanes will be operational from 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. towards Colombo on all week days.

The operation will commence...... on 15 August from the Moratuwa Kurusa Handiya to Katubedda and from the Savoy Cinema Hall to the Bambalapitiya Junction; on 22 August from Katubedda Junction to Maliban Junction and from Bambalapitiya Junction to Pittala Junction; on 29 August from Polduwa Junction (Diyatha Uyana) to Ayurvedha Junction and from Town Hall Junction to Thunmulla Junction; on 5 September from Maradana Technical College Junction to Kompanna Weediya; on 12 September from Kompanna Weediya to Colombo 11, and on 30 November from Borella to Maradana.

"Vehicles are prohibited to overtake another vehicle when plying in bus priority lanes," Prof. Amal S. Kumarage from the Department of Transport and Logistics Management, University of Moratuwa said at a media conference yesterday.

The bus priority lane project is a result of the successful experiment conducted in Rajagiriya in March 2017. According to MMWD, highways and overhead bridges are not a way out of the traffic congestion issue. Strengthening the public transport system instead is the solution, and towards that course they have proposed a few steps. Introducing bus priority lanes is one such solution."Furthermore, we have set plans to establish Public Transport Centres in Kottawa, Battaramulla and Colombo Fort in the course of this year, and in Panadura, Moratuwa, Piliyandala, Kaduwela, Kadawatha, and 18th Mile Post in the course of 2018. We have also set plans to broaden the train system and to introduce a light rail system from Malabe to Fort and Fort to Kollupitiya by the end of 2018," he added.

The Sri Lanka Police, University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka Transport Board, Road Development Authority, National Transport Commission, Western Province Road Passenger Transport Authority and the Colombo Municipal Council are partners in this MMWD Project.
