Yupun to compete today in Madrid
South Asian 100m record holder Yupun Abeykoon will compete at the World Athletics silver medal meet (Meeting Madrid) at Estadio Vallehermoso in Spain today. Just a week ago the Italian based sprinter finished fourth at the Rome Diamond League 100m clocking in at 10.16 seconds, and broke into the Olympic quota by World Ranking, becoming the first South Asian Athlete to be ranked in that list in the 100m. He is now ranked 50th in the Olympic ranking and 48th in the world.
Olympic ranking includes invitation entry places. Yupun will be up against three sub 10 runners with Akani Simbine (9.89), Gift Leotlela (9.94) - both from South Africa - and Italian sprinter Filippo Toru (9.99) in the line-up. The line-up also includes Rosin Ogunode from Qatar (10.0), Edward Alonso of Panama (10.01) and Amaury Glitin of France (10.07), making it one the toughest competitions Yupun has had to face. The competition is classified category B, which will give 100 points placing score for 1st place.
