Sports Yohan, Thurstan’s leading all-rounder

Hiniduma Liyanage Yohan Sachintha of Thurstan College Colombo performed creditably as an all-rounder in the ‘Singer Trophy’ Under-19 Division One Inter Schools Cricket (Two day) tournament 2019/20 season conducted by Sri Lanka Schools Cricket Association.       

The left-handed batsman and right arm off spinner, Yohan scored 561 runs with two half centuries and claimed 50 wickets for 866 runs during the 2019/2020 season. His best bowling performance in an inning was against Maliyadeva Kurunegala (7/69).

Yohan commenced his cricket career at President’s College Kotte in 2010 under coach Susil Ananda. He also joined the Sanath Jayasuriya Cricket Foundation to improve his game and was coached by Fazie Anass. He represented the school under-13 team from 2010 to 2013, and proved his capabilities as an all-rounder. He represented the college under-15 team in 2014 and 2015. He represented the Colombo District Cricket team in the Prima Champions Trophy District Tournament conducted by Sri Lanka Cricket. He represented the College under-17 team in 2016 and was also inducted into the first XI team as a fresher. He scored over 400 runs with 2 half centuries.

He joined Thurstan in 2017. He represented the college under-17 team and scored more than 300 runs and claimed 18 wickets. He represented the first XI team as a fresher in the 2017/18 season. He scored more than 400 runs and claimed 14 wickets. He represented the school under-19 team at the ‘Red Bull tournament’ and was part of the champion team in the ‘Antonian Sixes’.

He scored 711 runs with 5 half centuries and claimed 18 wickets in the 2018/2019 season where Thurstan emerged runner-up, and was the leading batsman. He scored the winning run in the Big Match after 27 years. He was the man of the match in the T20 big match.

He represented Old Thurstanite SC in the Division 2 and 3 inter club tournaments. He represented Ragama CC in the Major Youth Inter Club Tournament in 2019 and 2020.
