Yala maize cultivation makes rapid recovery

Maize cultivation in the 2020 Yala Season made a rapid recovery over the last year where the crop was devastated by the fall armyworm (FAW). And this year’s (2020) Yala production estimated to be 127 per cent more from the currently cultivated extent, over 2019 Yala as per data as at the end of July 2020, Agriculture Department data of 8 October showed.

This data covers the 2020 Yala forecast for crops such as maize as at 31 July 2020. The Department’s 2019 Yala final forecast was as at 30 September 2019. 

Maize production, from the currently cultivated extent of 12,999 hectares (ha) in 2020 Yala is expected to yield 51,058 metric tons (mts), 2019 Yala saw only an extent of 6,070 ha been brought under maize cultivation which yielded a harvest of 25,222mts in the review period. Ultimate maize cultivation 2020 Yala target is 17,504ha.
