The Sri Lankan wrestling team participated at the recently concluded World Wrestling Championship held in Oslo, Norway, and returned home sans its Manager Donald Indrawansa who had apparently disappeared before the departure of the team to Colombo with the cash that had been provided for the team’s return.

However, after the timely intervention of the Chairman and the Secretary of the Sri Lanka Wrestling Federation (SLWF), and with the supply of necessary cash for the team to head home and meeting costs involved in carrying out the PCR tests, the team had managed to return to Colombo on 8 October. When contacted, Secretary of the SLWF Jayantha Ratnayaka confirmed the sudden disappearance of the Manager of the national team in Oslo.

“The head coach of the national wrestling team informed us on the eve of the championship that the Manager had gone missing from his hotel room. Afterwards having informed the relevant authorities it was confirmed to us that the Manager Indrawansa had left his hotel room with all his belongings.” When asked on legal action that could be instituted against the missing Manager Ratnayaka opined: “During the initial days we inquired from all possible sources regarding the Manager’s disappearance after it was officially notified to us.

We have also notified the International Wrestling Federation as well as the Norwegian Wrestling Federation on this incident. They have already informed us that after the Manager is arrested, he will be deported from Oslo back to Colombo. Accordingly, we have also informed the Ministry of Sports, Sports Development Department, the CID and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.”

The World Wrestling Championship was staged in Norway with the participation of 102 countries. The Sri Lankan wrestlers who made an impact during the tournament were Madusanka Weerasuriya (KG 74 weight category), Charles Fernando (KG 65 weight category), Suresh Fernando (KG 79 weight category) and Anil Munasinghe (KG 79 weight category).
