World's Largest Star Sapphire cluster discovered in SL
The World’s Largest Star Sapphire cluster was discovered in Ratnapura, Sri Lanka today (27), weighing in at 510 kilograms (2.5 million carats).
The cluster of gems was found in the backyard of the residence of gem merchant, Dr. Gamini Zoysa, by a group of workmen who were digging a well, and has been valued at over $100 million.
“I have never seen such a large specimen before. This was probably formed around 400 million years ago,” Dr. Zoysa said.
Experts also point out, however, that even though the specimen has a high carat value, all the stones inside the cluster may not be of the same value or quality.
