The World Bank has agreed to grant a supplementary loan of USD 100 million for the COVID-19 Emergency Response and Health Systems Preparedness Project in Sri Lanka. The money is to be used to procure 14 million doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine, as the COVID-19 Prevention Task Force has decided to expand the primary target of vaccinating 60 per cent of Sri Lanka’s population.

The loan is also to be used to finance other costs pertaining to vaccination, Cabinet Co-Spokesman and Minister of Plantation Dr. Ramesh Pathirana explained. Accordingly, the proposal made by the Minister of Health to obtain additional financial assistance was approved by Cabinet this week.
