Wife of Vannila Aththo dies of COVID-19
Heenmanike, the wife of Vedda Chief Uruwarige Wannila Aththo died of COVID-19 at the Peradeniya Teaching Hospital yesterday (04).
Her death is the first reported COVID-19 death in Sri Lanka’s Vedda community.
Mother of eight sons and a daughter, she was 64 years old at the time of her death.
She died while undergoing treatment for the coronavirus.
A quick Rapid Antigen Test in the Vedda village revealed that 44 people, including Heenmanika, were infected with COVID-19.
The Vedda community has witnessed Heenmanika’s compassion for animals, as they have seen her prepare various meals for the animals in the kitchen.
According to coordinator of Wannila Aththo, the funeral arrangements for Heenmanike have yet to be finalized, but it is expected to be done in accordance with health regulations.
Health officials, on the other hand, have tested a number of people in the community for COVID-19 using PCR and Rapid Antigen Tests.
Despite the fact that a member of the Vedda community had previously been reported to be dead, the coordinator denied him being a member of their community at the time because he had been living separately from the community for a long time.
