Weapons and ammo stashed away in ceiling : CID raids Kosgoda Tharaka’s third safe house

The CID raided the third safe house of underworld kingpin Kosgoda Tharaka’s gang in the Kandala area in the Homagama Police Division yesterday (2).
Police said four hand grenades, a pistol, two detonators, a locally manufactured gun (Galkatas), 10 rounds of ammunition used for repeater weapons, a pair of handcuffs and an air rifle were also found.
The safe house was a two-storeyed house in the Kandala area between the Homagama and Pitipana Junctions.
Police added that a suspect, aged 38, was arrested on 1 July with a T-56 firearm in the Habarakada area in the Athurugiriya Police Division after questioning the three suspects arrested by the Police Special Task Force Organised Crimes Division and the Homagama Police in the Pitipana area on 29 June and 1 July, in connection with the weapons and explosives which were seized.
The three suspects are being further interrogated.
Police said the first floor has been rented out as a safe house by the suspect Kaushalya Indrarathna, which is a commercial building in Pitipana, Homagama. Police added that when the house was raided yesterday, the mother-in-law and father-in-law of the suspect Kaushalya, were there.
CID officers found firearms, explosives and live ammunition hidden inside the ceiling.
Police sources added the suspect has had underworld connections in the South and with several underworld gangs.
Meanwhile, the CID is also probing the assets earned by the suspect.
Firearms and ammunition including seven hand grenades were found on 1 July in the house of the maid of the suspect known as Pathiranage Nayani Wiweka (32) house in Pitipana.
