Colombo Kings skipper Angelo Mathews believes the Lanka Premier League (LPL) will bring great value to Sri Lanka cricket, and the tournament is a great platform for youngsters to showcase their talent.

“The Lanka Premier League will bring great value to Sri Lankan cricket. This tournament is a great opportunity for our youngsters and for every player, to play along with experienced players and share the dressing room. There are a lot of positives to take away from this tournament,” Mathews said after arriving in Hambantota. Colombo Kings was the first team to finalise their squads with Former South African opener Herschelle Gibbs as coach, while Sri Lanka spinner Rangana Herath will be his assistant.  Colombo Kings owned by Murfad Mustafa has some experienced campaigners with the likes of West Indies Andre Russel, Isuru Udana, Angelo Mathews and Dinesh Chandimal to name a few.

“We have a good balanced team with experienced players. The other teams too have players of that calibre. It is going to be a tough competition with a high standard of cricket being played,” the Skipper added.

LPL 2020 will see five franchises –Colombo Kings, Dambulla Vikings, Galle Gladiators, Jaffna Stallions and Kandy Tuskers – taking on each other in 23 matches. Double-headers will take place everyday, till the semi-finals of the tournament. The final will be played on 16 December. (MS)
