Wait your turn, don’t upset priority list – DDG Public Health
By Dilanthi Jayamanne
Deputy Director General (DDG) of Public Health, Dr. Hemantha Herath appealed to communities to wait for their turn to receive the COVID- 19 vaccine instead of upsetting the priority list which could result in the failure of the programme.
Dr. Herath said yesterday (23) that while high risk areas in the Western Province had been targeted as priority where Medical Officers of Health (MoH) in those areas would inform the public as to when they should come and get the vaccine.
Incidents have been reported where certain persons not only requested the vaccine but resorted to obtaining it by using their influence by demanding and threatening health authorities. This only caused problems for health staffers, Dr. Herath lamented.
“Trying to get the vaccine by overriding the priority list will only upset the vaccination programme and have a negative effect on the public’s confidence in the vaccination programme’s system.” He further said that Government would administer the vaccine to all those above 30 years.
He noted that the challenge currently facing the Government is that the demand for the vaccine had overridden production and supply. “Therefore we may not be able to purchase the vaccine as soon as we requested for it,” the DDG said.
