Entertainment Vajira Chitrasena conferred with Padma Shri award

Dr. Vajira Chitrasena, the pioneering Kandyan dance exponent, has been conferred with India’s Padma Shri award for her contributions in the field of art.

Indian high commissioner Gopal Bagley handed over the award to Dr. Chitrasena today (17) in the presence of prime minister Mahinda Rajapaksa.

She was recognized for her valuable contributions in the field of art further strengthening India-Sri Lanka cultural ties, the Indian HC tweeted.

Three eminent personalities from Sri Lanka have so far been conferred with Padma Shri, one of the highest civilian honours in India.

Earlier this month, Indian President Ram Nath Kovind conferred the award on the late Prof Indra Dassnayake posthumously for her contributions to Hindi and Indian culture.

Vathsala Dassanayake Ishtaweera received the award on behalf of her late mother at a ceremony in Rashtrapati Bhawan.

In 2011, Pandit W.D. Amaradeva became the first Sri Lankan recipient of the award.
