Local Vaccination - best measure against Omicron - Dr. Jeewandara

Director of the Department of Immunology and Molecular Medicine at the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, Dr. Chandima Jeewandara stresses the importance of obtaining both doses of COVID vaccination as a protective measure against the new variant, Omicron.

The first case of the COVID-19 Omicron variant was detected in Sri Lanka today (03).

Dr. Jeewandara revealed that the infected is an unvaccinated Sri Lankan returnee from Nigeria.

The infected has tested positive during his on-arrival PCR test on 24 November.

While testing was carried out two weeks ago, the samples were received only a few days ago, Dr. Jeewandara said.

"Sri Lanka is now on the list of countries where Omicron has been detected," he said.

While this is concerning news, Dr. Jeewandara reminded the public that vaccination is the best measure against the new variant.

"When your body is immune, it reacts to viruses differently compared to those whose bodies are naive," he explained.

"Immunity helps to prevent adverse outcomes of the disease. If you are vaccinated you can avoid severe complications."

Dr. Jeewandara especially requested high-risk groups of individuals to obtain both doses of the vaccine along with the booster shot, in order to keep their immune system stimulated.

However, he emphasized that while vaccination is very important to handle the new variant, public must also diligently comply with health guidelines issued by the Ministry of Health.
