URPA urges legal action against rice mafia

Rice stocks presently in the possession of the Polonnaruwa District Secretary have been sold to the Polonnaruwa District Rice Producers Cooperative Society after compiling bogus documents, the United Rice Producers Association (URPA) alleged.

Issuing a press release in this regard, they further alleged that the Polonnaruwa District Secretary had also proceeded to sell some of these rice stocks at higher prices to the private sector.

Hence, the URPA claimed that due to such acts, consumers had not been able to purchase rice at a certified price through the Lanka Sathosa and the Cooperative Society. The URPA has therefore urged the Government to institute legal action against those engaged in such unlawful acts and to take measures to release the rice stocks in the possession of the District Secretaries to the public through Lanka Sathosa and the Cooperative Societies.
