UNP will not sign MCC – Akila
By Saundarya Wellaboda
If the United National Party (UNP) wins a majority at the forthcoming General Election, and is called upon to form a Government, we assure that we will not sign the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) Agreement, said UNP General Secretary Akila Viraj Kariyawasam.
Addressing the Media yesterday (29), Kariyawasam claimed the Committee that has been appointed to review the MCC is biased towards the Government and therefore is dedicated to achieving the political agendas of the Government. Due to this reason, the UNP does not trust the judgment of the MCC review committee, he added.
Kariyawasam further opined there is no reason for the Government, which caused a huge uproar against the MCC during the Presidential Election, to waste any more time reconsidering the details of the MCC.
He further said without further deceiving the public, the Government should take a responsible decision to make an official statement in this regard, ensuring that they will not sign the MCC before the Election.
Kariyawasam said even though the MCC was initiated when they were in power, after knowing the majority opinion of the public was against the Agreement, the UNP made sure not to sign it.
He further said instead of concentrating time and effort into reconsidering the MCC, the Government should focus on providing the public with better relief systems due to the circumstances that have emerged in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.
