UNP objects to SJB’s use of green in campaign
By J.T. de Silva
The United National Party (UNP) yesterday (8) lodged an official complaint with the Election Commission (EC) concerning the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) using the colour green in their ongoing election campaign ahead of the 5 August General Election.
Submitting a letter to EC Chairman, Mahinda Deshapriya, UNP General Secretary Akila Viraj Kariyawasam urged the Commission to take swift measures to prevent the SJB from using the colour green, which is the UNP’s official colour as per the party’s constitution.
Kariyawasam further pointed out that the SJB’s official colour is blue according to said party’s constitution.
The use of green by the SJB instead of blue for their campaigning is a deliberate attempt to mislead UNP supporters and adversely affects the UNP’s election campaign, Kariyawasam charged.
Therefore, Kariyawasam has informed the Commission to look into the matter urgently and take immediate steps to prevent the SJB from using green colour in their campaign.
When contacted, Deshapriya refused to make any comment in this regard.
