The University Grants Commission (UGC) plans to open universities soon by providing both doses of the COVID-19 vaccine to all academic and non-academic staff members. Issuing a statement in this regard, UGC Chairman, Prof. Sampath Amaratunge said a programme has been implemented in collaboration with the health sector. He said both doses of the vaccine will be administered to academic and nonacademic staff above the age of 30 at all universities. Additionally, all universities have been instructed to coordinate with the nearest healthcare centres in the relevant districts to take immediate action for the vaccination of academic and non-academic staff and students under the age of 30.
The UGC will directly supervise the methodology implemented to oversee the progress of the vaccination programme for staff and students under the age of 30 in universities. Universities will be reopened in the near future in view of this progress, after discussions with health authorities, the Vice Chancellors of the Universities, and other relevant parties.
