Universities will reopen on 27 April with strict adherence to health guidelines the Minister of Education Professor G.L. Peiris said yesterday (19).
He said the only concern with the recommencement of Universities is the operation of hostels, adding that in order to maintain social distance in hostels and adhere to health guidelines, only third and fourth year students will be allowed into the University following which, first and second year students will be permitted.
He added the University Grants Commission (UGC) will take necessary steps for University examinations, different in each University.
The August school holidays will be limited to a week to cover the syllabus for students facing examinations, Prof. Peiris said.
He added that as the Grade 5 Scholarship Examination is due to commence on 3 October, the G.C.E. Advanced Level Examination is due to commence on 4 October, and the G.C.E. Ordinary Level Examination is due to take place at the end of January 2022, students require sufficient time to complete their syllabus.
Considering such need to prepare students to face examinations, the August holidays for 2021 will shortened to a week, he added.
