Unemployment rate rises to ten-year high
According to the reports issued by the Department of Census and Statistics, the unemployment rate in Sri Lanka has risen to a ten-year high.
In the first quarter of 2020, the unemployment rate was recorded as 5.7%, whereas in the first quarter of 2019, it was 4.5%, the Department pointed out.
According to the Department, this showcases that fewer job opportunities were available even prior to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The number of unemployed individuals estimated at 483,172 during the first quarter of 2020.
As per the data released by the Department, the unemployment rate remained under 5% for most of the decade, while the lowest point, i.e. 4%, was reported in the fourth quarter of 2011.
