Local Underage boy used for placing hand grenade at Borella Church

One of the three suspects arrested in connection with the finding of a hand grenade at Borella's All Saints Church has revealed that he placed the bomb with the help of an underage boy.

Police Spokesman SSP Nihal Thalduwa said the hand grenade was found atop a statue and was covered with matches, sellotape, rubber bands, and incense sticks, preparing it to explode if a fire broke out.

He also said that the three people apprehended had been interrogated, and one of them had placed the explosive.

He is a 56-year-old from Maradana, SSP Thalduwa said, adding that the man had used an underage boy who routinely visits the church.

The man has been in connected with the church for around 16 years and has been working at the church for nearly nine months.

"The sellotape and matches used to cover the grenade were also discovered in his home. The CCD has begun an extensive inquiry. The underage boy was brought before the Hulftsdorp Magistrate to make a statement. The purpose of placing the hand grenade, how he obtained it, and the others who aided him in placing the bomb are unknown."

He said that they will seek a detention order from the courts in order to question the suspects further.

The hand grenade belongs to the SFG 87 category.
