UN intervention will cause embarrassment – SJB
By Nabiya Vaffoor
The SJB said it would be a disgrace to Sri Lanka if UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet, has to intervene to ensure the existence of democracy in the country. SJB MP Imthiaz Bakeer Markar said the Sri Lankans in Italy are pushing the international community to protest because of the loss of democracy and the loss of human rights of people in Sri Lanka.
“Yesterday (15) was an important day, as the United Nations declared it as the Day of Democracy in 2007. The democratic Media of the world has been endangered according to the recent oral statement delivered by United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Bachelet. In that statement, 90 per cent of the points are from the actions that happened during the tenure of those who rule the country now and before 2015,” he added. He further said when the UN raised the issue of democratic human rights in Sri Lanka, the people reacted.
“The issues that are being raised today are not issues related to the war. 90 per cent of the issues are questions about the rights of our country’s citizens. That is what the High Commissioner’s statement says. If the UN has to intervene to protect the human rights of our citizens through this, it would be disgraceful.
We must be able to ensure the existence of democracy in our country by ourselves,” added Bakeer Markar. He was speaking to the Media at SJB Headquarters, yesterday (15).
