UN fetes SLAF
The ‘United Nations (UN) Service Medal Awarding Parade’ for the ‘6th Sri Lankan Aviation Contingent’ (6th SLAC) participating in the UN peacekeeping mission under the Multidimensional Integrated Stabilisation Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA) was held on Tuesday (14) at the Contingent’s premises in Bria, Central African Republic, the Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) said on Thursday (16). MINUSCA’s Portuguese Deputy Force Commander, Major General Paulo Maia Pereira was the chief guest at this occasion.
He was received by 6th SLAC Commander, Wing Commander Jeeth Samarasekara. Local community leaders were also invited for this event. The Medal Parade was commanded by Wing Commander W.G.N.D. Wewakumbura. The Parade was followed by Sri Lankan cultural events and a drill display performed by contingent members. These performances were presented by both the 6th SLAC and the Zambian Battalion personnel.
Pereira, speaking at this event, said the SLAC was the first aviation contingent deployed in MINUSCA and appreciated the air operations successfully conducted in Sector East Theatre and the Civil-Military Co-Operation (CIMIC) activities carried out by this Contingent even with the COVID-19 pandemic. The proceedings concluded with lunch comprising Sri Lankan delicacies with Sri Lankan music provided by the Sri Lanka Aviation Calypso Band.
