The University Grants Commission (UGC) has approved the establishment of a new Department of Information Technology (IT) at the University of Jaffna and the preliminary work to set it up within the Faculty of Arts, by next year (2021), has commenced.
Preliminary work has been started to set up this Department in the Art Gallery of the University. The IT Department building has been selected and provided, and the Vice-Chancellor (VC) is making available other assistance and guidance.
The UGC launched an IT programme last year with the objective of boosting IT based skills for employment opportunities for Arts graduates. Associate Professor C. Srisatkunarasa, the Head of the Faculty of Arts, Dr. K. Sudhakar, Senior Lecturer Dr. A. Raghuram and Senior Lecturer Dr. S. Kapil explored the possibilities of starting a separate IT Department for arts students and submitted a report on the practicality of it. Based on that report, IT Departments were introduced this year in Faculties of all Universities.
Once the IT Department is started, students will be able to obtain a Certificate or Diploma in IT during the same period as their degree, issued by the Department of Computer Science of the University of Colombo. According to the VC, the courses will be conducted as per the syllabus.
