News Udukuda Moolai Sluice Gate Project: Farmers seek help

Farmers using the Sagamam Tank have raised concerns over the suspension of work halfway, after spending Rs 4 million for the Udukuda Moolai Sluice Gate across the Neethai River, which comes under the purview of Sagamam in Akkaraipattu.

The estimated cost of the project is Rs 9.8 million.

The Federation of Farmers’ Organisation, in a letter signed by its President M.I. Kiyabdeen, and sent to the Minister of Irrigation, Chamal Rajapaksa, detailed the irregular manner in which this project, that envisaged the irrigation of well over 800 acres, was suspended abruptly.

In the interests of the farming community who cultivate nearly 800 acres of paddy lands under the Sagamam Irrigation Scheme, the Federation requested Rajapaksa to intervene in this matter, to salvage the construction work already commenced but not completed, by ordering the technical officials to proceed towards its satisfactory conclusion.
