U-19 Division II Cricket (Two-Day) Tournament : Sithum passes 100 wickets milestone
Left arm leg-spinner Sithum Akilanka of St. Sebastian’s College Katuneriya passed the 100 wickets milestone this season in the ‘Singer Trophy’ Under-19 Division Two Inter Schools Cricket (Two-day) tournament conducted by Sri Lanka Schools Cricket Association.
Sithum commenced his career at Pannala National School at under-13 level in 2012. Chandana Danansooriya was his first coach. He represented the first XI team in 2013 as a fresher and claimed over 50 wickets in the under-19 Division III tournament.
He represented the under-15 team for two seasons (2014/2015) under coaches Kasun Ruberu and Jaliya Madhusanka. He represented the Kurunegala District under-15 team in the Prima Champions Trophy Inter District Cricket Tournament in 2016.
He joined St. Sebastian’s College Katuneriya in 2016 and played for the under-17 team under coach Anton Costa, and also played a couple of matches for the under-19 team. He took 48 wickets in the under-19 Division II Tournament in 2016. He claimed 11 wickets in the annual big match against arch rival St. Peter’s College Negombo in 2017, and was adjudicated best bowler and man of the match.
He represented the North Western under-19 team in the Inter Provincial Tournament in 2018. He was deputy skipper of the first XI team during the 2019/2020 season under coaches Samitha Costa and Prasath Malith. He scored 426 runs with 3 half centuries and claimed 111 wickets for 1,159 runs (Ave. 10.44) in 16 matches. His best bowling performance in an inning was 7/7 against Asoka Vidyalaya Colombo, and best match bag 12/22 against the same team. St. Sebastian’s qualified for the quarter-final of the tournament.
