U-19 Division II Cricket (Two-Day) Tournament.: Nimnaka, a brilliant leg-spinner
Nimnaka Amodya Jayathilake, left arm leg-spinner of St. Anthony’s College Katugastota, has been a consistent wicket taker in the ‘Singer Trophy’ Under-19 Division Two Inter Schools Cricket (Two-day) Tournament conducted by Sri Lanka Schools Cricket Association.
In the 2018/2019 season as a 2nd year coloursman he captured 128 wickets with six 10-wicket hauls in 18 matches to steer his school to be runner-up in the Division Two tournament, and as a 3rd year coloursman in the 2019/20 season captured 84 wickets in 14 matches. Suneth Gunathilake was his coach during these two seasons.
Nimnaka commenced his cricket career at Sri Chandananda Buddhist College Kandy at under-13 level in 2014 and captured 67 wickets. In 2015 he captured 46 wickets. He worked under coaches Dileepa Sumanarathne and Seelarathne. In 2016 he joined St. Anthony’s College Katugastota and represented the under-15 team. He was made vice-captain of the team in 2017. He worked under coach Dimuthu Weerasinghe. He represented the Kandy District and Central Province under-15 teams in the 2017 Prima Champions Trophy tournament.
He represented the college under-17 team in 2018 and 2019, working under coach Susantha Basnayake. He also got the opportunity to represent the college 2nd XI team in 2016 and played in the Mini Battle in 2017.
During the 2017/2018 season he played a couple of matches for the 1st XI team as a fresher. He captured 96 wickets during that season and obtained Cricket Colours. He worked under Coach Sampath Perera. He represented the Kandy District and Central Province Cricket under-19 teams in 2017. He graduated to the 1st XI team during the 2018/2019 season as a 2nd year coloursman and played in the two big matches in 2018 and 2019. He was in the 50-member pool of the Sri Lanka Under-19 Cricket Squad and played in the Under-19 Super Provincial Cricket Tournament in 2019.
He has established the following bowling records:
n12 wickets in the 2019 Murali-Vaas Trophy encounter (St. Joseph’s vs St. Anthony’s). (Previous record 10 wickets held by Pradeep Fernando).
nMost number of 10-wicket hauls (six) during the 2018/19 season. (Previous record held by Muttiah Muralitharan - five)
nMost number of wickets in a single season (128) in the 2018/19 season. (Previous record held by Muttiah Muralitharan - 127 wickets)
