Two PNB officers remanded till 21 July

Colombo Chief Magistrate Lanka Jayaratna, yesterday (8), ordered two suspect Police Narcotic Bureau (PNB) officers who were apprehended on charges of maintaining links with big time illegal drug peddlers, to be remanded till 21 July.

The two suspect PNB officers were identified as Police Constable Batuwattage Ruwan Pushpakumara and Police Sergeant Jayasinhage Saman Kumara Jayasingha. 

Submissions were made through a B Report. Chief Inspector of Police of the (CID) Jayasundara submitted the B Report for the prosecution. 

The prosecution informed Court that the CID had commenced an investigation into the case, based on instructions received from Acting Inspector General of Police Chandana D. Wickremaratna.

The prosecution also informed Jayaratna that the two aforesaid suspects had been charged with the re-selling of illegal drug stocks that had been taken into custody by the PNB. It was also informed to Court by the prosecution that further investigations into 19 suspects taken into custody by the CID were still proceeding.

The CID told Court that the Colombo High Court has already issued a suspension order regarding a sum of Rs 4.6 million which had been linked to 43 bank accounts as per provisions contained in Sections of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act.

The Court was also informed that the suspects had accrued property valued at Rs 100 million and noted that a sizeable number of lands had been turned into low priced land Deeds. The prosecution then urged the Chief Magistrate to issue an order to enable them to peruse the bank accounts of the relatives of the suspects presently in custody.

Jayaratna informed the CID to study the relevant Act carefully and resubmit the request and ordered the two suspects to be incarcerated till the aforesaid date.
