Colombo Additional Magistrate Rajindra Jayasuriya on Monday ordered two traders of Pettah who were produced in Court on charges of being engaged in a protest while flouting quarantine curfew, to be released on two sureties of Rs 50,000 each.
Police informed Court that the two suspects had engaged in a protest opposite the Fort Railway Station on 19 September, demanding that they too be allowed to engage in their trade as the Government has allowed liquor stores to be opened during the quarantine curfew.
They said the two suspects were arrested on charges of violating ongoing curfew regulations and stated that a few more suspects will also be arrested as well in this connection and urged the Magistrate to issue an order to imprison the two suspects.
However, lawyers for the two suspects stated that their clients had carried out their protest while adhering to health regulations and urged the Court to issue an order for their release on suitable bail conditions. Taking the submissions into consideration the two suspects were ordered to be released on bail by Court.
