Two Indian prisoners are being extradited to India under a SAARC exchange agreement. Under the exchange agreement, the Additional Secretary of the Ministry of Justice has directed the Commissioner General of Prisons to hand over two Indian prisoners to the Indian government.

One of the two prisoners was convicted of possessing, smuggling, and importing toxins in violation of the Poisons, Opium and Dangerous Drugs Act and sentenced to three life terms in prison on each charge by the Negombo High Court. As a result, this prisoner had been serving a nearly 12-year sentence.

The second prisoner was convicted of a number of offences under the Dangerous Drugs Ordinance and sentenced to three life terms in prison on each charge, serving nearly six years in prison.

As a result, plans have been made to transport the two prisoners to the Bandaranaike International Airport on 12 and 13 January under the protection of the prison authorities and will hand them over to the Indian Police.
