Two Policemen were arrested, following complaints, for extortion and soliciting bribes. Police Spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana said, the Police had launched a special operation within the Police in order to apprehend undisciplined and corrupt Police officers.

DIG Rohana on 15 January, noted the Elpitiya Police had arrested a Police Constable over an extortion incident and was produced before Elpitiya Magistrate for an identification parade and further remanded.

Speaking further, DIG Rohana stressed that the Constable had gone to a cinnamon cigar factory situated at Urugas Junction with three others and allegedly demanded a ransom.

Furthermore, Matara Police has arrested a Police officer following a complaint made by a motorcyclist who alleged that the officer had demanded a bribe of Rs 5,000 instead of taking legal action against a traffic violation.

“We are conducting this operation constantly within the Police in order to take action against corrupt and undisciplined Police officers,” DIG Rohana said.
