The Government on Tuesday (6) gave the nod to hold a two-day debate on the misuse of the Mahapola Scholarship Trust Fund during former UNF government, following a request made by Minister of Trade Dr Bandula Gunawardena.

Gunawardena said the Mahapola Scholarship Trust Fund was an initiation of the late Minister Lalith Athulathmudali. “It is sad to see that some have misused the money,” he said.

Meanwhile, Chairman of the Committee on Public Enterprises (COPE) Dr. Charitha Herath on the same day presented the report regarding the Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology (SLIIT) which was set up investing money from the Mahapola Scholarship Trust Fund.

Dr. Herath also noted that misusing the fund was problematic and added that COPE has presented recommendations which should be taken regarding the SLIIT.
