Two arrested in Beruwala for canvassing

Beruwela Police yesterday (4), nabbed two suspects who had been engaged in canvassing for three contestants ahead of today’s (5), General Election.
Police said, among the items taken into custody from the suspects was a sum of Rs 35,000 found in the motorcar used by the suspects, a stock of election posters containing the image of a former Minister, a National Identity Card alleged to be of a former State Pharmaceutical Corporation Chairman, several documents and a wallet containing cash.
At the time of the raid, the former Chairman had fled the scene. Beruwela Police Officer-In-Charge, Lalith Padmakumara went into action on a tip-off about a group of persons that were openly canvassing for a former Minister near the Molliyamale Mosque in Beruwela.
According to the Police, its probe had revealed the motorcar had been rented in Mount Lavinia. Police added that out of the group that had fled, two persons had surrendered. It is also alleged the group prior to canvassing had promised a sum of Rs 5,000 to the public. The two suspects are residents of Dharga Town and Dehiwela areas.
