SJB MP Dr. Rajitha Senaratne yesterday (4) requested the Government to use Nelum Pokuna Mahinda Rajapaksa Theatre as a COVID-19 treatment centre.
Moving the adjournment debate on the COVID-19 situation in the country, Senaratne noted that it is not safe to admit COVID19 patients to hospitals with tertiary care services because the virus could be spread more by doing so. “There is plenty of space in Nelum Pokuna Theatre, which is not being used at the moment. So it could be used as a COVID treatment centre by arranging beds. Apart from Nelum Pokuna Theatre, Millennium Ward Complex at the Colombo South Teaching Hospital and the Polonnaruwa Renal Treatment Hospital could also be used as a COVID treatment centres,” he said.
Speaking further, Seneratne said medical experts suggest a lockdown of the country. “When experts suggest something like this, the Government’s supporters try to sling mud at them using photos they have taken with me during meetings held when I was the Health Minister. This is not acceptable,” he added. He also noted that there is a severe shortage of certain medicine like thyroxin in the country at the moment.
