Train services within provinces will resume today (25), according to the Railway Department. Measures have been taken to operate 4 Kelani Valley line trips from Avissawella and Kosgama, 8 Puttalam line trips from Negombo and Kochchikade, and 22 coastal line trips from Aluthgama, Kalutara, Wadduwa, Panadura, and Moratuwa. General Secretary of the Sri Lanka Station Masters’ Union, Kasun Chamara, said multiple trains have been scheduled to travel from Galle to Matara and Beliatta, as well as from Matara to Beliatta in the Southern Province.

In the Central Province, trains will run from Kandy to Matale, Nawalapitiya, Nanu Oya, Polgahawela, and Rambukkana. “The COVID-19 Advisory Committee has instructed the Department of Railways to allow only season ticket holders to board trains. Following instructions not to issue ordinary tickets, tickets will not be issued at train stations starting today. In addition, the Government has chosen to begin the elementary school section of schools today.

Throughout the year, we have been disappointed by the Department of Railways’ refusal to offer a clear directive about the validity of those students’ season tickets,” he added. He went on to say that, while they had properly informed the Railway Department and the Government in writing and orally in the aftermath of the first wave of COVID-19, they regret that they had acted in such a way as to create trouble for the passengers without paying attention to it. “We announce that the Railway Department’s Administration has full responsibility for the inconvenience caused to train passengers as a result of this,” he said.
