World White Cane Day today
Today (15) marks the World White Cane day.
White cane is the tool that fulfills the requirements pertaining to mobility and direction for visually impaired persons. It is also considered the exclusive symbol of visually impaired persons.
The feeling of dependence is minimal of a visually impaired person who uses a white cane and it serves as a symbol of safety, self-respect, and independence.
The prime objective of this day is the removal of socioeconomic, cultural and environmental issues and obstacles faced by the visually impaired by educating the world about blindness and how the visually impaired can live and work independently and to celebrate the abilities and successes achieved by blind people in a sighted world.
Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa released a statement on the White Cane Day.
"The International White Cane Safety Day is a day to celebrate victory. Also for the blind or visually impaired, the white cane is a tool of independence. Sympathy is not necessary for the blind community but a right to live equally as other people in this society is a necessity. As a result of this, White Cane Protection Day was established for the blind people of the world."
"A visually impaired person who uses a white cane has a reduced sense of dependence and a sense of security, self-esteem and independence. We must protect the rights of our brothers and sisters and work to avoid their hardships. We must also fulfill our responsibility as a country for them. I would like to join with them for the celebration of International White Cane Safety Day today with all visually impaired people in Sri Lanka" He stated.
