To prevent banned items being thrown into Welikada Prison: 15-ft fence to be erected

The Prisons Department has decided to erect a 15-foot fence around the Welikada Prison, to prevent banned items from being hurled in.
Shanty dwellers in Wanathamulla are the biggest burden to the Welikada Prison, in particular when it comes to throwing banned items including drugs and mobile phones into the Prison from outside its walls, the Department said, and added that the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) has failed to relocate them.
Pointing out the issue, Prisons Commissioner (Administration), Chandana Ekanayake said that they had no power to take action against shanty dwellers, but that they could only complain to the Police.
Prohibited items have been thrown over the walls of prisons for a long time and these incidents have more than doubled since 2019.
“Our officials are there to take care of those items and to prevent them from being handed over to inmates. But incidents are on the rise and that is why we thought of building a 15-foot fence around the Welikada Prison, specially where female prisoners are housed,” he said.
