Tamil National People’s Front (TNPF) MP Selvarasa Gajendran was arrested yesterday (23) along with another person for paying homage to Thileepan, an LTTE member who died while on hunger strike.

Police had been placed on alert over a possible tribute event at the ‘Thiyaga Deepam Dileepan’ memorial in Nallur, Jaffna. The Jaffna Police had immediately dispatched a jeep to the memorial near the Nallur Temple complex after which Gajendran and others paying tribute were arrested for public gathering during lockdown.

“It was a small crowd of just five people at the venue,” Selvarasa protested demanding the Police officers to produce a Court Order banning the event. The arrestees were later released on Police bail. Thileepan died on 26 September 1987 after refusing food and water for 11 days demanding the rights of the Tamil people.
