Sports Three youngsters from Jaffna for LPL

Three talented youngsters from Jaffna – Theivendram Dinoshan (18), Vijayakanth Viyaskanth (19) and Kanagarathnam Kapilraj (21) – have been included in the Jaffna Stallions squad that will participate in the inaugural Lanka Premier League (LPL) Twenty20 Cricket Tournament next month.

Theivendram Dinoshan is from St. John’s College and Vijayakanth Viyaskanth is from Jaffna Central College. Both schoolboys will represent their schools in the next school cricket season (2020/2021).  Kanagarathnam Kapilraj is an old boy of St. John’s College Jaffna and was the deputy skipper during the 2017/2018 season.  

All-rounder Theivendram Dinoshan has represented the college from under-15 level. He was a member of the Jaffna District Under-15 Team, Northern Province Under-15 Team and the Under-19 Northern Province Team as a right-hand middle order batsman and right arm medium paceman.

Vijayakanth Viyaskanth is another talented all rounder who excelled as a righthand batsman and right arm leg spinner for his school. He has also represented the college team from under-15 level and was a member of the Jaffna District Under-15 Team, Northern Province Under-15 Team, Under-19 Northern Province Team, Team Dambulla and Sri Lanka Under-19 Team. He played in two matches - against India Under-19 and Australia Under-19 in 2019.

All-rounder Kanagarathnam Kapilraj also played from under-15 level. He represented the Jaffna District Under-15 Team, Northern Province Under-15 Team, Under-19 Northern Province Team, Police SC Under-23 Team and Tamil Union C & AC Under-23 Team as a right-hand batsman and right arm medium paceman.

Selva Waran, CEO of Jaffna Stallions, pointed out that the inclusion of three youngsters in their squad is a testimony to the kind of cricketing talent the Northern Province has, and also an encouragement to the cricketing community in Jaffna and rural cricketers across the island.

These three youngsters will have the opportunity of competing alongside a star-studded line-up, which includes international stars in the calibre of Dawid Malan, Shoaib Malik and Usman Shinwari. Among the local players, the Jaffna Stallions will have the services of Sri Lanka all-rounder Thisara Perera (skipper), Wanidu Hasaranga, Dhananjaya de Silva and Suranga Lakmal.
