Officers from the Chilaw and Seeduwa Police arrested three soldiers for demanding protection money from those involved in the sale of illegal drugs.
Police said two of the suspects had visited a woman, allegedly involved in the drug trade in Chilaw, and had demanded Rs 15,000 to allow to continue her activities without hindrance. The two suspects had then left her saying they would be back to collect the sum later. Afterwards, the woman had lodged a complaint with the Chilaw Police, which led to the arrest of the two suspects.
Meanwhile, another soldier had visited a household in Seeduwa to demand Rs 80,000 to allow them continue their illegal drug trade. The Negombo Division Police had managed to arrest the suspect. When contacted, Army Commander General Shavendra Silva said there would be an inquiry into the activities of the three soldiers and that they would be interdicted.
