The Department of Sports Development took disciplinary action against three athletes and two officials that participated in the 60th National Inter-State Senior Athletics Championships held in India last June.

The committee appointed to look into the disciplinary issue of the three athletes, coach and the manager of the team, has recommended action against them with effect from 16 August 2021.

The three athletes, Kalinga Kumarage, Shelinda Jansen and W.L. Sugandi, will not receive the lump sum from the Sports Ministry given to them for training for four months, and also, they will not be permitted to use any of the equipment and the grounds attached to the Sports Ministry. Coach Vimukthi de Soyza and A.S.N. Abeyasekera were banned from attending international meets for one year.

The alleged disciplinary breaches have been reported from the relevant team members after they returned from India after participating at the aforementioned competition. After the team had complained that facilities provided at the Nilwala quarantine center in Matara were inadequate, they had been moved to the Sugathadasa hotel premises, where the team members have reportedly held a party, breaching quarantine regulations.
