President instructs officials to "go to the villages"
A special programme was held yesterday (07) at the Temple Trees by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa in the presence of Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa, Head of the Presidential Task Force on Economic Revival and Poverty Alleviation Basil Rajapaksa, Cabinet and State Ministers, to apprise the officials of the National Programme "Back to the Village with Work" through the initiative of "Discussion with the Village".
The objective of the programme was to identify and discuss the issues that arise in the implementation of projects and the ways in which they could be resolved.
Addressing the plight that local farmers are currently facing, President Rajapaksa stated that by cultivating what can be grown within the country, the money which is now being sent to the farmers abroad will be diverted to local farmers. He added that the Government has decided to provide water, technical knowledge, and solutions to the ongoing property issues in an attempt to uplift the agricultural sector.
The President stated that in order to solve the issues faced by the rural community which represents nearly 75% of the total population, it is essential to use people-centered approaches as opposed to strict regulations. He requested for the relevant officials to go to these villages themselves and identify their issues and provide solutions for them.
The Prime Minister added in this regard that the aim of this year's budget was to improve the living standards of the rural families involved in industries such as farming and fishing. He added that given the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, State institutions too must integrate themselves with modern technology as other sectors have done within this period, thereby providing officials with the opportunity to work on something at any given time.
