Sports Tennis National’s 2020: Wonara wins in thrilling three set battle

Savini Jayasuriya and Wonara de Alwis overcame Sajida Razick (6-2, 6-2) and Prabaddhi Perera (4-6, 6-4, 10-2) in the women’s singles category on the third day of the ongoing Tennis Nationals working off at the SLTA hard court. 

It was a treat to watch the game between Wonara de Alwis and Prabaddhi Perera, where Wonara came from behind to get the better of her opponent in a thrilling three setter. 

It was a heated first set with Wonara and Prabaddhi, both power hitters, making every shot count. Prabaddhi got the better of Wonara and registered a comfortable 4/6 win in the first set.  

 In the second set Wonara finally found her rhythm and continued her brilliant form to take the second set 6/4 quite comfortably. Playing with supreme confidence, Wonara continued to go for her shots from the outset in the decider, in addition to effectively employing the drop shot, which drew repeated errors from her opponent, to wrap up the third set 10-2. 

Meanwhile, in the men’s open singles category Kavisha Rathnayake and Chathurya Nilaweera registered wins over Sean Sanderson (7/5 6/4) and Luka Knese (6/4 6/4).
