Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs, Digital Technology and Enterprise Development, Namal Rajapaksa, told Ceylon Today the programme to provide Tablet Computers (Tabs) to school students on a concessionary basis will be implemented in the near future.
He pointed out that these Tabs will be provided to schoolchildren, jointly with the ‘e-thaksalawa’ programme of the Ministry of Education and that through it, data will be offered free of charge so that online education can be engaged in with far more convenience. Minister Rajapaksa also said a plan has been formulated to provide schoolchildren from poor families in rural areas with Tabs as a donation.
He said further the components for these Tabs will be obtained from China and that they will be assembled here and that an industry of assembling Tabs in this country will be established through this endeavour and another group of persons will be granted job opportunities.
According to Minister Rajapaksa, these Tabs can access only educational material relevant to school syllabuses and nothing external can be accessed. He said special software will be introduced into these Tabs so that nothing else can be accessed.
The Minister declared further that the assistance of organisations including Youth Club Campaigns and the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna as well as that of Minister of Education Professor G.L. Peiris and State Minister Susil Premajayantha, will be given for this programme.
