The suspect who took the life of the 30-year-old female, whose decapitated body was found on Dam Street, has taken his life, Police Spokesman, DIG Ajith Rohana said.
The victim’s body, which was found in a travelling bag on 1 March, was identified as a resident of Theppenawa, Kuruwita. DIG Rohana added that Police investigations revealed the suspect was a Sub Inspector (SI) attached to the Buttala Police Station.
Police identified the victim by analysing CCTV footage where the couple were seen entering a guest house close to the Hanwella Bus Stand on 28 February. Further footage showed the suspect leaving the guest house with a travelling bag and boarding a Colombo-bound 143 bus at 11:45 a.m. on 1 March.
The victim had left her residence under the guise of going on pilgrimage and had checked into the guest house in Hanwella with the suspect.
Special Police teams were deployed to the suspect’s residence in Badalkumbura yesterday (3) morning, after which the Police found the suspect’s body in a nearby forest.
A letter traced by the Badalkumbura Police showed the couple’s relationship had led to the violent crime. DIG Rohana further said the inquest and post-mortem were conducted yesterday (3) by the Sirigala Judicial Medical Officer.
