Measures have been taken to commence the ‘Surakimu Ganga’ project covering all 103 rivers in the country on 22 March under the patronage of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.
The Ministry of Environment is expecting to spend Rs.32 billion on the project.
Meanwhile, Minister of Environment Mahinda Amaraweera instructed the security forces to arrest and take action against illegal sand miners as water in the lower reaches of the Menik Ganga has become completely stagnant due to the unsustainable practice.
The Surakimu Ganga project is also planning to plant Kumbuk (Terminaliaarjuna) plants on the banks of the Menik Ganga and to conserve the river water which flows through the Yala Sanctuary so that it can be utilised not just by humans but also by wildlife.
