Surakimu Ganga Project: Govt approves 40 proposals

The Government has approved 40 proposals to be initiated by the Surakimu Ganga Project, which was launched to conserve Sri Lanka’s 103 rivers. Environment Minister Mahinda Amaraweera said the Government has already provided Rs 200 million of funding for the 40 projects. The Surakimu Ganga Programme for the conservation of 103 rivers in Sri Lanka was launched by the Ministry of Environment.
Accordingly, the District Secretariats forwarded the identified projects that may be implemented in regard to the rivers that flow through their districts to the Ministry of Environment, and 40 of them have been approved. As part of the Surakimu Ganga programme, Rs 50 million has been allocated for the planting of Kumbuk and Mee seedlings along the rivers and Rs 19 million has been allocated for lavatory facilities for families living on the banks of the Walawe, Menik and Kelani rivers.
